What Is SnapKu?
SnapKu is a fast-paced, high-energy word game that puts a modern spin on the classic art of Haiku. With multiple ways to play and win, it's a race against the clock to show off your creativity, wordplay, and quick-thinking brilliance!
Haiku is a centuries-old Japanese poetic form made up of just 17 syllables, arranged in three lines:
5 syllables / 7 syllables / 5 syllables.
It’s short, expressive, and—here’s the best part—it doesn’t need to rhyme! The beauty of Haiku lies in saying a lot with very little.
Traditionally, Haiku reflects on nature and fleeting moments. But SnapKu takes the form in a fresh, unexpected direction. Instead of cherry blossoms and snowfalls, our prompts come from five playful categories—like this one from our Miscellaneous deck:

Our journey began with a curious little boy and a deep love for words.
By the age of two, our son wasn’t just listening to bedtime stories—he was reading them to us. He’d jump into family Scrabble games, sound out words, and surprise us daily with his budding vocabulary. But the real magic? At just three years old, he was writing Haikus. Yes, actual Haikus—the timeless Japanese poetic form that we’ve always loved.
Imagine opening a birthday card from a toddler and finding a handwritten poem about a pebble dropped in a pond. True story.
Years passed. Life got busier. Then came the Pandemic.
Like many families, we were thrown into a new reality—one filled with uncertainty, too much screen time, and a desperate need to reconnect. For me, it was a wake-up call: Time with family wasn’t just important—it was everything. But how do you unplug when the world is more online than ever? Especially when your Haiku-writing toddler is now a full-blown teenager?
That’s when the magic returned.
Spontaneously, we started creating Haikus again—on the spot, in the kitchen, while folding laundry, or during car rides. A song on the radio, a smell from the oven, even a moment of silence could spark a poem. It was fun, silly, grounding—and unexpectedly powerful.
Haiku became our way to slow down, look up from our screens, and truly be together.
It wasn’t just a game—it was a new way of seeing the world.
Friends and family started joining in. Encouraged by their enthusiasm, we realized this little practice had the power to spread joy far beyond our home. And just like that, SnapKu was born—a blend of poetry, spoken word, and the playful spirit of word and card games.
Now, we invite you to join the SnapKu community. Whether you're a seasoned writer or a curious beginner, SnapKu is your space to get creative, be present, and share joy—one Haiku at a time.
